Organization Overview
Founded in 1985, CGNA is a voluntary non-profit organization that represents over 2,000 leaders of nursing who work with older adults in a wide variety of settings across Canada. CGNA has been the proud host to 15 highly successful nursing conferences. The CGNA Biennial Meeting is the premier educational, scientific, and networking conference for professionals in the field of gerontological nursing.
The 16th Biennial Meeting will be a joint conference hosted with the Gerontological Nursing Association of Ontario (GNA). GNA serves a membership of over 1800 Gerontological Nurses in eleven chapters spanning the Province. Incorporated in 1979, GNA’s mission is to advocate for a high standard of nursing care and related health services for older persons and to promote professionalism in gerontological nursing practice.
The face of gerontological nursing in Canada is evolving and changing in accordance with demographic imperatives and the growth of evidence-informed nursing knowledge. CGNA responds to evolving change as a partner in the health care system with older adults and recognizes that health is a provincial/territorial partnership with the federal government. CGNA is a special interest group of the Canadian Nurses Association and contributes to the health care system by:
- promoting high standards of gerontological nursing practice,
- promoting education programs in gerontological nursing,
- participating in affairs that promote the health and wellness of older adults,
- promoting networking opportunities for nurses,
- promoting and disseminate gerontological nursing research, and
- presenting the views of CGNA to government, educational, professional, and other appropriate bodies.
The mission of CGNA is to address the health of older Canadians and the nurses who participate with them in health care. The vision of CGNA is to promote excellence in gerontological nursing through leadership, knowledge, and scholarship. CGNA is a federation consisting of gerontological nursing groups from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia. Individual members are also represented in New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Ontario and the North West Territories.
